The Correct Usage of an Electronic Sphygmomanometer

Estimated read time 3 min read

The correct usage of an electronic sphygmomanometer involves the following key steps:

1. Preparation Before Measurement

  • Rest quietly: Before taking a blood pressure reading, sit quietly or lie down to rest for 5-10 minutes to ensure your body is in a relaxed state. Avoid smoking, drinking tea or coffee within 30 minutes prior to the measurement.

  • Choose a suitable environment: Ensure the measurement environment is quiet and comfortable. Avoid measuring when you are emotionally excited or anxious, as this may cause significant fluctuations in blood pressure.

  • Check the device: Confirm that the electronic sphygmomanometer has sufficient battery power, that the cuff (armband) is intact and undamaged, and that the device functions properly.

2. Correct Cuff Wearing

  • Position selection: Slide the cuff onto your left upper arm with the hose facing downward toward your forearm. Ensure the bottom edge of the cuff is 1-2 centimeters (approximately the width of one to two fingers) away from the elbow joint. The colored marker on the cuff should align with the artery on the inner side of your arm, and the air tube should lie on the inner side of your forearm, in a straight line with your middle finger.

  • Adjust tightness: Fasten the cuff snugly around your arm. The tightness should allow you to insert one or two fingers between the cuff and your arm. Avoid making it too tight or too loose, as this may lead to inaccurate measurement results.

3. Measurement Process

  • Posture adjustment: During the measurement, sit upright with your arm placed flat on a table, palm facing upward. Keep the cuff at the same horizontal level as your heart. Do not lean forward or let your arm hang in the air.

  • Start the measurement: Press the start button on the electronic sphygmomanometer. The device will automatically inflate the cuff and display the blood pressure reading. Do not speak or move your arm during the measurement.

4. Precautions After Measurement

  • Read the values: After the measurement is completed, record the displayed systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate. If you have doubts about the result, rest quietly for a few minutes and then remeasure, with an interval of no less than 3 minutes between the two measurements.

  • Take the average of multiple measurements: For more accurate results, it is recommended to take multiple measurements and calculate the average. Electronic sphygmomanometers can usually store the results of multiple measurements for easy reference later.

5. Maintenance and Care

  • Clean the device: Regularly clean the cuff and the main body of the electronic sphygmomanometer to prevent dust and dirt from affecting measurement accuracy.

  • Battery management: Ensure the battery has sufficient power and replace it regularly to avoid impacting the measurement results.

By following the above steps, you can ensure the correct use of the electronic sphygmomanometer and obtain accurate blood pressure measurement results.
