A travel eyeshadow palette is often held in one hand while the other hand uses a brush. In that position, the mirror, lid and base have to work together. A compact can fit a small pouch yet be awkward to hold if the user must keep tilting the base to see into its mirror.
Start with the way the palette is held
Compare holding the palette below the face with resting it on a table. These positions place the eye, mirror and base in different relationships. A mirror reflects the view set by its orientation; the useful angle therefore depends on where the user’s eyes and hand are positioned.
There is no single opening angle that suits every palette and user. On a sample, check whether the intended area of the face is visible while the base remains comfortable to hold. If the user has to raise one edge steeply, also consider how that changes access to the powder pans and support under the base.

The open view illustrates the relationship between the mirror and base. It does not establish a hinge holding angle or a travel performance result.
Distinguish opening travel from holding behavior
The maximum angle a lid can reach is different from the position it maintains when released. A hinge may open freely, reach a stop or provide resistance over part of its movement. Do not assume that every hinged lid stays wherever the user places it.
Observe whether the user needs a finger to support the lid, whether the mirror moves when the hand shifts and whether closing the lid requires an awkward change of grip. A design that deliberately opens flat can still work well; it needs to be evaluated in its intended holding position rather than against an arbitrary angle.
Evaluate the finished base in the hand
Width, thickness, weight distribution and edge shape all contribute to the hold. Users should be able to reach the intended grip areas without covering the mirror or pressing on the powder wells. Include the pans, mirror and intended contents when assessing a representative assembly, because an empty shell has a different weight distribution.
Review the actual finish as well. A matte appearance or the label “soft touch” does not establish a measured grip advantage. Compare decorated samples under relevant handling conditions and record whether the hand needs more effort to keep the base steady.
Carry the useful arrangement into the closed pack
Finally, check the closed thickness and the space occupied by the intended applicator. A comfortable open palette still needs a closure and internal clearances appropriate to carrying. Evaluate these features on the selected design rather than inferring them from the product photograph.
Sambound’s eyeshadow packaging range at sambound.com offers examples of different layouts. For a travel project, a representative sample connects that layout with the mirror view, lid behavior and grip the user actually experiences.
