Packaging Artwork Revisions: Keep the File and Approval Sample Together

Estimated read time 3 min read

When artwork changes after a decorated packaging sample has been approved, the earlier approval still describes the earlier version. Connect the revised file to the affected components and the new approval decision so production does not combine a current logo file with an obsolete placement or color reference.

Identify the exact revision

Give the released artwork a clear identifier and revision, and describe the change from the preceding version. Link it to the component drawing and decoration specification. A file name such as final-new does not explain whether the lettering, color, dimensions or position changed.

Esko's discussion of artwork approvals emphasizes tracing iterations, approval actions and the current file. Those principles can be applied through the project's agreed records; they do not establish that a packaging supplier uses a named software system.

Map the change to physical parts

Identify each affected lid, barrel, cap, label or other decorated component. State which unchanged references remain applicable. If a graphic continues across two parts, review both parts and their assembled orientation even when only one print file was edited.

Separate an artwork revision from a structural change. Moving a logo may require a decoration-tooling review, while changing a molded feature may also require a component drawing revision. Neither change automatically requires a completely new mold; the actual affected process determines the scope.

Choose evidence that can show the change

A digital proof can confirm the intended text and layout. A physical decorated sample is needed when the decision concerns its appearance on the selected curvature, substrate or finish. Identify whether that sample uses the intended production process and which features remain unrepresented.

Compare the revised sample with the released artwork and the applicable appearance references. Record the decision for the changed features and any additional checks prompted by the change. A new ink or coating, for example, may require its own suitability review; approving lettering does not approve every finish property.

Release one coherent version

Hold affected work until the required decisions are complete. Mark superseded files and samples so they cannot be mistaken for production references, while retaining their revision history. Link the released file, component versions, decorated sample and approval record in the handover.

Sambound lists packaging decoration services at sambound.com. For an individual project, the agreed revision record and representative sample establish what may be produced. A general description of integrated services cannot establish that a specific artwork change has been approved.
