How To Compare Roundness Readings On Molded Bottle Necks

Estimated read time 1 min read

A bottle neck may have different roundness at two heights, even when the readings come from the same part. Identify each measured section by its function and location before comparing the results.

Measure like sections

Use the drawing to identify the bore or outer land being measured. Reference every height to the same datum, and keep the trace clear of thread starts, interrupted geometry, and transitions unless the method was designed for those features. Record the instrument, support, section height, and analysis method. A clamp that squeezes a thin neck can change the profile being measured.

Take a circular trace or a validated equivalent at each defined section. A two-point diameter check is useful for screening dimensional variation, but it can miss lobes and does not establish full roundness. Compare the profiles as well as their summary values. If only one section differs, check whether the closure or insert actually engages at that height. Repeat on several parts and verify the fixture and measurement method before linking the variation to a particular process. Evaluate fit and seal performance on the assembled pack separately.
