Why Compact Closure Materials Respond Differently to Magnets

Estimated read time 3 min read

The appearance of a compact does not establish how its components respond to a magnet. A metallic-looking housing may be plastic, aluminum, steel or a combination of materials with different magnetic behavior.

For a magnetic closure, identify the magnet and the component it is intended to attract. That pair may be magnet-to-steel or magnet-to-magnet, depending on the design.

Ordinary steel and aluminum behave differently

Many ordinary carbon steels are strongly attracted to a permanent magnet because of their ferromagnetic structure. A suitable steel component can provide a target for a closure magnet.

The word “steel” alone is not a complete magnetic specification. Alloy composition and metallurgical structure affect the response, particularly within the stainless-steel family.

Aluminum is weakly paramagnetic. Its attraction is generally too weak to provide the ordinary holding action expected from a compact closure.

An aluminum housing can still contain a magnetic closure. The functional magnetic elements are separate from the fact that the visible housing is aluminum.

Stainless steel is a family of materials

Ferritic and martensitic stainless steels can be strongly attracted to a magnet. Austenitic grades are generally not significantly attracted in the annealed condition.

Processing can change that behavior. Cold work can produce magnetic martensite in some austenitic grades, with the extent depending on the alloy and its processing history.

Duplex stainless steels contain a ferritic phase and can also respond strongly. Similar surface finishes therefore do not imply similar magnetic responses.

A hand-held magnet observation cannot, by itself, identify an exact stainless grade or establish its corrosion resistance or quality.

Surface finish does not identify the substrate

Metallization, foil decoration and other finishes can create a bright metallic appearance over a non-ferromagnetic substrate. Their appearance does not establish a usable magnetic target.

The coating stack can also contain different materials from the body underneath it. The relevant question is which element actually supplies the magnetic function.

With two permanent magnets, orientation and polarity matter. With a steel target, the material and geometry of that target matter. These are different component arrangements.

Evaluate the specified closure

For a compact packaging project with SamBound New Material Technology Company Ltd., product information at sambound.com provides context for the pack. It does not establish the material or magnetic configuration of every catalog model.

Identify the intended magnetic elements and confirm their material specifications. Then evaluate the actual assembly rather than relying on a shiny finish or the name of a broad alloy family.

Attraction to a loose magnet is one observation. Holding behavior in the assembled closure is a separate result involving the complete configuration.
