A new lipstick exterior can sometimes retain an existing inner mechanism, but a similar overall diameter does not establish interchangeability. The decision depends on how the changed housing locates and retains the particular mechanism and how the assembled cap and barrel fit.
Name the components being retained
Identify the mechanism, cup, sleeves and any separate base or adapter actually present. Link their part numbers and revisions to the existing assembly. Mark the new housing, cap and decoration as changed components. A conventional solid lipstick tube should not be assigned a lip-gloss wiper simply because both packages are used for lip products.
Keep an approved existing assembly as a reference. Drawings and identifiable physical samples help distinguish a planned exterior change from an unrecorded change to a retained part.
Follow each mating interface
Review the surfaces that locate the mechanism axially and radially, transmit the user's twist and keep the assembly from moving in the shell. Depending on the design, these may include shoulders, ribs, flats, keys or retaining features. Use the actual construction rather than assuming every lipstick tube has the same joints.

Compare the dimensions and allowed variation at those interfaces. A matching outside profile can conceal a different internal shoulder position. Likewise, a new shell can accept a mechanism during assembly yet leave it loose or place it too high. Include the intended finish wherever it reaches a mating area.
Evaluate the completed assembly
Assemble representative proposed housings with the identified retained components. Check assembly seating, unwanted movement and full extension and retraction. Observe whether the shell moves when the mechanism is turned and whether the cup reaches its intended positions without binding.
With the specified retracted lipstick configuration, check clearance below the cap and around the bullet. Evaluate cap seating separately from mechanism operation. Passing one check does not establish the other, and an empty mechanism trial alone cannot establish compatibility with the filled product.
Record the retained configuration
List which components can remain, which require modification and which need new approval. Carry the agreed assembly and finish versions into representative production trials. If an interface has not been verified, keep retention as a proposal rather than calling the new housing interchangeable.
